El Greco's son, Jorge Manuel, who was known to work in the style of his father, probably painted this canvas. A reduced version of El Greco's original painting for the Cathedral of Toledo, it shows the dramatic moment before the Crucifixion when Christ's executioners strip him of his red robe. While one figure in the foreground prepares the cross, a mob, cast in darkness, eagerly anticipates the violence.
